United Nations University (UNU) was established by the General Assembly in 1973 to be an international community of scholars engaged in research, advanced training, and the dissemination of knowledge related to the pressing global problems of human survival, development, and welfare. UNU started activities in 1975 at its headquarters in Tokyo. Its activities focus mainly on peace and conflict resolution, development in a changing world, and science and technology in relation to human welfare. UNU operates through a worldwide network of research and postgraduate training centres, with its planning and coordinating headquarters in Tokyo. Why does UNU offer this Programme?
UNU offers this programme in the aim of enhancing the capacity of individuals in developing countries. UNU is particularly interested in encouraging the students from those countries not only to finish their course at universities in Japan, but also to achieve excellent academic performances. The purpose of this Programme is to provide financial assistance to those students while they study in Japan and encourage them to contribute to the development of their home countries in the future.

UNU is located on Aoyama Dori in Shibuya-ku. It is an eight minute walk from JR Shibuya station and a five minute walk from Omotesando station Exit-B2 (Chiyoda-line, Ginza-line, and Hanzomon-line).
